Search Within Search from Google

googlelogo thumb Search Within Search from Google Have you seen the new Google Search within Search feature ? Google has updated its Web Search so that when you search for certain sites (Wikipedia, Nytimes and a number of others) a search box is presented along with the standard results to allow you to search within the site right there and then !

You have always been able to limit your search within a site by using the (”site:”) operator (as discussed in a previous post), so there is nothing new here. However, this is one of those small things that can:

  1. Help those people who DO NOT know about the existing site specific search functionality
  2. Saves you the trouble of typing out the “site:” operator if it is your intention to site within the site

Hats off to Google for keep doing the small things (as well as some big innovations !) that incrementally improves the overall users’ experience and makes the whole search experience pretty much dummy proof. The impact from the publisher’s perspective however is another story and alarm bells are ringing in the community due to the perception that Google is potentially taking away control from the publishers themselves and is leveraging people’s brand to sell more search advertising.

For those of us who already knows how to search within sites, I can’t see much of a gain in productivity. However I do foresee myself doing more search within site using Google’s search engine (since that search box is so tempting !) which in most situations should be a good thing and give me better results.

Do you like this new feature ? Do you want to see more of this feature ?
