Google Desktop kicks ass. Copernic is OK too.

There was a long discussion about this at DonationCoder here. Worth reading through that thread. I myself use Locate 32 as it is simple, need no installation and does what it does well (index files). It can be used together with the FARR plugin for quick access to search.

One thing about some of the more popular desktop search technologies such as Google desktop is that it has become very bloated with lot of addons.

Without looking at the details, Locate 32 certainly looks like it has takne a no frills approach and focus on the basic of file search, which I guess is a good thing.

Google desktop search:  It seems a terrible concept to have your drive indexed on someone else's server (despite all the good people in the world).

Copernic has always been a dog, but that is what I still use until I can replace it with a complete solution.

Everything and neoSearch are new contenders (speed and low impact on resources), but I don't think they search within files (yet?).

Stopka can search direct or build an index, and it searches within files.  The author said it doesn't index email. (don't know if it searches it?)

To search within files is crucial!  There is no perfect file naming system.

Searching email is crucial!  How could it not be?  Further, everyone does not use Outlook.  It is only text, regardless which email program, so lets figure out how to search it.

Everything, neoSearch, and Stopka seem to be approaching the "Holy Grail" in this space (still not there).  Why has so much R&D on searching the entire ethersphere failed miserably at enabling one to search a finite hard drive for something already "known"?

Great post Zaqry!

and thanks for the in depth advice. I must admit, I wasn't even aware Google Desk search indexes my desktop content on their own server !
